Debbie Martin is of mixed Inuit-European descent and a member of NunatuKavut. Dr. Martin holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from Dalhousie University and is currently an Assistant Professor of health promotion at Dalhousie, where her research and teaching efforts focus on issues related to Aboriginal peoples’ health. Specifically, Dr. Martin’s research interests include: indigenous perspectives on the social determinants of health; intersections of culture, food and health, and; indigenous and community-based research methodologies. Dr. Martin is currently a Co-Principal Investigator of the Atlantic Aboriginal Health Research Program (AAHRP), which is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research – Institute of Aboriginal Peoples Health, and a Co-Principal Investigator of the NunatuKavut Community Health Needs Assessment, which is funded through Health Canada’s Aboriginal Health Transition Fund. Dr. Martin has recently been chosen to represent AAHRP on the Aboriginal Health Research Networks Secretariat, the coordinating body for the Network Environments for Aboriginal Health (NEAHR) Centres across Canada.
